[MUSIC] For people all over the world, lack of sleep, reduced physical activity, poor nutrition and other factors have led to an increase in deteriorating health, notably brain health. Our brains remain the most complex organ in our bodies, controlling our senses, movement, thoughts, emotions and other endless functions. We need to start focusing on our brain's fitness to maximize our health and well-being. Hi, I'm Dr Karima Benameur, a neurologist with Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. I've been fascinated with the brain and its abilities, and want to share what I've learned with you. In the last several decades science has made great strides in uncovering causes of negative effect on brain health as well as methods and lifestyle practices to help optimize your brain. More than ever doctors need to inform patients about these lifestyle practices and their positive impact on our biology. Over the next few weeks we'll go through remarkable cases in scientific research to support the efficacy of, and need for, biohacking. At the end of each week you'll be given brief recommendations for implementing some of these practices into your daily routines. Being conscious of our lifestyle choices and learning about the brain's relationship to the rest of the body can help reclaim responsibility for the actions we take, and improve brain performance, health, and longevity. If we seize control of our biology now, we can help ensure a healthier version of ourselves later.
