Hello and welcome to this course on Fundraising and Development Foundations. It's the first in the Fundraising and Development specialization offered by UC, Davis. My name is Angela Joens and I have over 25 years of fundraising experience. I began my career in the Midwest and served most of my career working in higher education, I also have a little bit of experience in healthcare fundraising. Over the course of my life, stewardship has become a big passion of mine. In my current role, as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Development Outreach at UC, Davis, I manage six teams that make up the central services of our development and alumni relations operation. Over the next four weeks, you will have the opportunity to draw from the successful development achievements of several guest speakers with expertise in fundraising, philanthropy, donor acquisition, relationship management, as well as the development of annual major gift and planned giving programs. You'll gain insight and direction showing you how to strategize, plan, launch, run, and close fundraising campaigns, as well as how to develop and maintain stewardship and recognition programs. If you're considering going into a career of fundraising or development or if you're already in the field and just want to advance in your career, this course will give you the foundation you need. The first module starts with the history and the impact of philanthropy in the United States. You'll be able to define essential terminology, that you will be expected to know as a development professional, and explain the ethics and guiding principles of confidentiality. You will be able to recount the steps in the donor development process, describe various kinds of campaigns, and explore the career opportunities in this field. Module two focuses on how to develop a case for support, so that you will be able to persuade prospective donors that your organization is worthy of their donations. You'll also be able to identify prospects and build relationships with constituents, and describe building a base of support for an annual fund. Developing major gift and planned giving programs, is the focus of the third module. You will distinguish between planned giving and major gifts, and compare the essentials of each. In addition, you'll be able to strategize foundation and corporate giving. The final module goes deeper into fundraising campaigns, stewardship and donor recognition programs. After this module, you will have a grasp of what it takes to preplan, open, run, and close a successful fundraising campaign. You will meet consummate professionals in each area of development. We have a lot to cover, so let's get started.
