Examining and exploring the various types of images and graphic designs will be the focus of this module. We will also review the various types of images used in both print and digital design projects. By the end of this module, you will understand the importance of image sizing and formatting by comparing the various computer programs that work with image management, manipulation, and production. Let's start this module by reviewing and deciphering the alphabet soup of image file names, BMP, EPS, GIF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG. So many acronyms, it sounds like a language, which it kind of is, the language of image files. To understand more about the language of image file names, we must first look at file formats in general. As this image shows, there are many, many kinds of file formats. These format extensions are what allow the computer to read and open a file, and can be found in what is called the extension of a file name. These three or four letters at the end of a file name in the file extension must be preceded with a dot or period for the computer to read the data. However, often you need to have a specific computer program to open certain file formats. And some file or image formats are more commonly used in certain professions. As for the graphic design profession, bitmap or BMP, JPEG, EPS, GIF, TIFF, and PNG are the more common file formats used. The next few videos in this module will look at and describe these and other file formats graphic designers work with.
