Before writing your syllabus, consider who will be reading it.

Typically it's the student, but be careful.

The student is not always the primary

person you're communicating with through a syllabus.

Especially when considering elementary-aged students.

Students in the online environment may be working independently.

This is typical of your high school students.

But often, your younger students are supported by a learning coach.

Remember in module one, when we talked about the three roles of a teacher?

[SOUND] Well, the learning coach is the person who is on

site or at home in the same space with the young student.

The learning coach is helping the student interpret

and understand all his or her learning tasks.

[SOUND] The learning coach is helping the student keep up with

assignment due dates, solve technical

problems, and address any other whole-child

learning needs.

The learning coach may even be recording video

or taking snapshots of the student working on projects.

Now sometimes the learning coach is a paid

teaching professional, and other times, it's a parent.

As an online teacher you need to be sure you're effectively communicating

the policies and overarching plans to the student and the learning coach.

Be sure to use a level of language appropriate for effective

communication with your reader.

Now that you have in mind who your reader is for this syllabus, take

a look at the syllabus template and

the syllabus checklist linked in our course materials.

The checklist is a description of minimum requirements for a successful syllabus.

The criteria on this checklist will be used by your classmates

to evaluate the quality of your

assignment, so read this checklist carefully.

You should aim to get all seventeen criteria checked with a yes, but you'll

need at least fourteen of them to earn a score of 80% on the assignment.

You'll notice that the criteria on the checklist

align to the headings on the syllabus template.

Also, I've provided you with an example syllabus.

Some of the syllabus criteria are straightforward, like

course information, but some require a bit more explanation,

so in the next video I'll walk you through a tutorial by example.
