Next we are going to talk about endocrine disorders or disorders of hormones and other products secreted by glands. We will start by covering a common disease diabetes, and after we'll move on to other endocrine conditions; including thyroid cancer and dysfunction and osteoporosis. In covering diabetes, we have Dr. Craig Wynne, a practicing family physician who will provide an overview. Dr. Wynne will discuss types of diabetes, some of the most important aspects of the disease in general, and as it applies to the different subsets, and give an idea of the impact of diabetes on the population in the United States today. We will also hear at length from Dr. Eric Stoopler and Dr. Thomas Sollecito, on the impacts of diabetes on the oral cavity; which range from secondary effects of the disease, to oral conditions and lesions caused by medications prescribed for diabetes. They will also discuss the management of the diabetic patient in the dental office, both routinely and in the case of emergency; including what to ask patients and what to keep in mind. This also includes very specific recommendations for practicing dentists, to ensure that all professionals are properly prepared to treat diabetics and deal with any emergencies that might arise. We have Dr. Wynne's thorough introduction to set up these recommendations and to help give a basis for why these recommendations are important. Given the diabetes epidemic facing the United States, understanding this topic and its impact on patients in any setting is essential for all dental providers, let alone all health care professionals.
