[MUSIC] We will begin the note reading process once the student has established a nice setup, and is comfortable playing in the key of A major and is starting to learn pieces in the key of D major. Like learning to read, note reading is a long process. In the beginning, even though the students are learning to play by ear, we do teach them the names of the strings, and eventually the names of the notes under their fingers. When we get to the key of D major, we will make flash cards that the students can take home and go through in their daily practice. Here are the flashcards that we have made for Sophia. First, we drew five lines for the staff. Then a treble clef. We then picked out a different color to represent each string, and then drew the notes on the staff. On the back of the note cards, we wrote down the note name, what string it is played on, and which finger is used to play that note. Can you put your violin up? Okay, so can you play that note? [MUSIC] Very good. What's the name of that note? >> B. >> B. And we look on the back and it says B 1 on A. Good. Let's do another one. Can you play that one? [MUSIC] >> Very good. What's the name? >> G Sharp? >> G Sharp. And we turn it over, and sure enough, G Sharp. And it says, high second finger on the E string. Okay, great job. Your student can keep the note cards in their case, and go through them one or more times a day. When you feel that your student is ready for their first A tude book, I recommend books that have a larger print. There are many wonderful A tude books that are available for the beginning level student. You can check the resource list on the course error page. The next note reading exercise is my very favorite. I learned it from a student in my pedagogue course from Russia. She told me that this is how she grew up learning to read music. I love it and it really works. I call it play, pluck and say. First the student will play the exercise, then repeating the exercise the student will pluck and say the note name. Okay, so let's do it. So, let's start on the E string here and we're going to do MartelĂŠ, finger before the bow and I will follow, you can follow long with my pencil. Ready? [MUSIC] Good. Okay, now let's pluck and say those notes. So let's put your thumb right here on the edge of the fingerboard, and pluck a little bit over the fingerboard. And pluck and say those notes. Ready? >> [SOUND] D. [SOUND] F sharp. [SOUND] E sharp. [SOUND] A. [SOUND] G-sharp. [SOUND] A. [SOUND] B-sharp. [SOUND] F-sharp. [SOUND] E. [SOUND] F-sharp. [SOUND] G-sharp. [SOUND] A. [SOUND] B-sharp. [SOUND] A. [SOUND] B-sharp. [SOUND] A. >> Very good. [MUSIC]
