What are the admission requirements?
We are looking for students who are passionate about engineering leadership. A background in engineering is recommended.
When is the admission deadline?
Enrollments are accepted on an ongoing basis; there’s no deadline to apply, and you can get started as soon as you’re admitted.
What do I need to do to complete the Professional Certificate?
To complete the Professional Certificate, you need to:
- Submit a brief application. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis; there’s no deadline to apply, and you can get started as soon as you’re admitted.
- Enroll in and pay for all Specializations in the Professional Certificate. Most Professional Certificates include between 1 and 5 Specializations. You may qualify for financial aid through a state program, or your employer may be able to reimburse you for some or all of the Professional Certificate cost.
- Successfully complete all Specializations in the Professional Certificate. You’ll earn a shareable Coursera Specialization Certificate for each Specialization.
Do I need to attend on-campus or live sessions?
No! Everything you need to complete the Professional Certificate is available online, and you can learn on your own schedule as long as you meet the weekly assignment deadlines. You may be invited to attend some live events or programs both online and offline, but these are optional.
What if I fall behind or need to take time off?
No problem. This Professional Certificate is designed to be flexible. If you fall behind in a course, you can switch to the next session – and if you need a break between courses, you can join your next course in a later session.
Does this Professional Certificate qualify for tuition reimbursement?
Many employers offer tuition reimbursement for Professional Certificates. Check with your employer to find out if this Professional Certificate qualifies.
How do I purchase the Professional Certificate?
You’ll need to make three payments, one for each Specialization in the Professional Certificate. You can make all of these payments upfront, or purchase each Specialization as you progress. To purchase the first Specialization, Leadership Development for Engineers, visit the Specialization enrollment page.
Does this program qualify for State financial aid?
This program does not qualify for Title IV or State aid.
Can I get university credit for completing this Professional Certificate?
No – this is a non-degree bearing Professional Certificate, and does not confer academic credits toward a degree. However, you will earn a recognized Professional Certificate from Rice University.

I’m not sure I’m interested in the Professional Certificate - can I just audit the courses?
If you’re not sure if the full Professional Certificate is right for you, you are welcome to audit the first course in each Specialization to learn more about the content and teaching style. The audit option includes access to all video lecture content, but does not include access to graded assignments. The second and third courses in each Specialization are not available in audit mode, and you will need to pay the Specialization enrollment fee to access those courses.
How should I reference this Professional Certificate on my resume once I finish?
You can list the Professional Certificate as a “Certificate in Engineering Management and Leadership from Rice University .”
