Owen leads the Predictive Ecology Research Group at the University of Zurich since 2011. The group aims to advance how well ecological phenomena, such as species abundances, species richness, and decomposition, can be forecast. Much biodiversity research at the University of Zurich occurs in the scope of the Global Change and Biodiversity University Research Priority Programme (, which Owen co-directs. Owen is Director of the Ecology PhD Programme and Ecology Masters, and has taught ecology and statistics for over 15 years.
