Led by Dan Gordon, a University of Maryland faculty member who teaches business modeling in the National Science Foundation's I-Corps Program, this course enables you to develop and apply the Business Model Canvas tool to scope a corporate challenge or opportunity. You will learn how to identify and communicate the nine elements of a business model: Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partners, and Cost Structure. Your completed project will be a customer-validated Business Model Canvas that outlines the business case for a new product or service to address your selected challenge or opportunity in a corporate context.   • Companies often place young, hard-charging mavericks in charge of start-up ventures within the company. Frequently, these managers are new to the company, and are believed to be less constrained by companies’ current ways of thinking and working. Unfortunately, they’re also unfamiliar with corporate resources, and lack the credibility and personal networks to draw on key resources. As an alternative model, our approach and audience for this course aligns with the lessons learned from GE, 3M, and others. We will train existing junior- and middle-managers, who are already successful at running internal businesses, to develop and lead new businesses within the company.

  • No specific background is required. This Specialization is ideal for employees, entrepreneurs, managers, consultants, or anyone aiming to hone their skills.

  • Although you can take the courses in this Specialization in any order, we do recommend that you follow the sequence of (1) Developing the Opportunity, (2) Building the Business Model, (3) Crafting Strategies for Innovation Initiatives, (4) Financing and Profiting from Innovation, and (5) the Final Project.

  • Time to completion will vary based on your schedule, but we anticipate most learners being able to finish the material within 3 to 6 months.

  • Each course in the Specialization is offered every two weeks.
