This specialization explores the history of Positive Psychology, as well as applications, interventions and methods used in the field. Learners in this specialization will complete five courses in topics related to the Foundations of Positive Psychology. Topics include: 1) The Past, Present, and Future of Positive Psychology, 2) Applications & Interventions in Positive Psychology, 3) Character, Grit, and Research Methods, 4) Resilience Skills, and 5) a culminating specialization project.

    Positive Psychology: Martin E. P. Seligman’s Visionary Science

    4 weeks of study, 4-6 hours/week


    Dr. Martin EP Seligman, renowned worldwide as the “father of Positive Psychology,” has led visionary leaps in scientific research as well as our empirical and personal understandings of what it means to flourish as humans. This course explores the past, present, and future of Positive Psychology as a journey through the key scientific leaps led by Dr. Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania. There are no prerequisites.

    Positive Psychology: Applications and Interventions

    Four weeks of study, 4-6 hours a week


    Positive interventions are one of the building blocks for the application of positive psychology in our day-to-day lives. Some existing positive interventions have emerged directly through research, while others emerged from the world of practice and are researched later. In this course we will explore positive interventions through theory, research and practice. Suggested prerequisite: Positive Psychology: Martin E. P. Seligman’s Visionary Science

    Positive Psychology: Character, Grit and Research Methods

    Four weeks of study, 5-7 hours a week.


    Through the study of Angela Duckworth's and Claire Robertson-Kraft's article "True Grit" along with viewing interviews with researchers and practitioners, students will learn how apply research methods to their study of Positive Psychology. Students will learn how to develop a research hypothesis and how to understand the difference between internal and external validity. Students will begin to understand and apply the strengths and weaknesses associated with different types of measurements and evaluation designs and interpret the results in an empirical study.     Positive Psychology: Resilience Skills

    Four weeks of study, 2-5 hours a week.


    Students will plan how to incorporate resilience interventions into their personal and professional lives and will be exposed to the foundational research in resilience, including risk and protective factors. Several types of resilience interventions will be explored including cognitive strategies, strategies to increase positive emotions such as gratitude and awe and various relationship enhancement skills. At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to summarize resilience applications with many diverse populations including those in education, the US Army and Department of Defense, first responders and professional corporations.

    Positive Psychology Specialization Project: Design Your Life for Well-being

    4 weeks of study, 2-5 hours per week.


    Students are encouraged to take the first four courses of the Foundations of Positive Psychology Specialization before starting this course and completing the Specialization Project. This course brings all the key concepts from the first four courses to practice as students develop and test a new positive intervention for an audience of their choice. Students will identify opportunities in their daily lives to increase the well-being of themselves and others using knowledge they've developed in the first four courses of the Specialization. Students will be asked to evaluate the efficacy of a positive intervention based on subjective and objective measures and compare how empirical and non-empirically-based positive interventions can be applied to influence a person's well-being while reflecting on how the fundamental elements of research methods are important in the everyday application of Positive Psychology.
